Plastic Free July is Almost Here

Newsletter
June 2022

Plastic Free July is a "global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities." For more than a decade, the Community Environmental Council has led the Central Coast in pursuing a circular economy by reducing waste, like single-use plastics, as a way to get more community members thinking about the environment and climate change.

See below for details about the Plastic Pollution Solutions webinar we are hosting on Friday, July 15, and join us tonight, Thursday, June 23 at our Plastic Free Expo.

Leaning Into Bold Climate Action

It’s time to lean into solutions like never before — and that means unrelenting, focused, and inclusive climate action — with our neighbors abroad and right here at home. Check out some recent examples from our community.

School Coins for Climate

Children today will likely face three times as many extreme weather events in their lifetimes as their grandparents did. But young people are also highly aware of the importance of caring for our planet, and many have strong moral clarity around addressing issues like climate change and pollution. Read more.

Cultivating Climate Leaders

Eva Haro discusses how volunteering at the Community Environmental Council's Santa Barbara Earth Day provided an opportunity to connect, network, and ultimately find employment with a nationally-recognized clothing company addressing the climate crisis through environmentally friendly fashion. Read more.

Support Bike-Share

Tell your Senator to vote NO on the Kill Bike-Share Bill. Bike sharing systems have already reduced car traffic by millions of miles and provided an essential last-mile link for public transit. The insurance requirement in AB 371 will end this valuable transportation option, put more cars on the road, and make our streets less safe. Email your senator today.

Climate: Front and Center

Earlier this month, President Biden addressed the 9th Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, an institutional gathering of heads of states and governments from around the world. The purpose of the summit was to renew cooperation and reaffirm democracy, and the overall approach conveyed mirrors our mission here on the Central Coast: While the climate crisis is daunting, the science dictates that it is not too late to mitigate and adapt. Read more about the Summit in this op-ed by CEC's CEO Sigrid Wright.
