CEC is committed to creating a more resilient and just region in the face of climate change. Through our work with the Central Coast Climate Justice Network and elsewhere, our vision includes an end to racial injustices and their resulting environmental inequities.

Every year, CEC produces the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival for over 30,000 participants. This is only one of the dozens of large-scale festivals held annually in our region. These type of events frequently have no solution for keeping attendees hydrated, other than selling plastic water bottles at food vendors. They also do not tend to have plans for eliminating plastic waste, such as plates, utensils, and water bottles.

Greening CEC’s Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival
At our Earth Day Festival, we have employed hydration solutions by working with local water purveyors like Drink Water with Life and Matilija to provide multiple water stations at the event. We provide compostable cups and encourage attendees to bring their own reusable bottles. We also require food vendors to use sustainable servingware. Each piece of waste at the festival is hand-sorted to make sure that compostable and recyclable items don’t go to the landfill.  Our diversion rate averages 93%, a huge number for an event of this size.

Greening the Green Gala
We practice what we preach. Our annual fundraising and awareness raising event, Green Gala, diverts 98% of waste each year.
